Pre-School class    3-6 years

Topic Based

Each month lessons focus around a particular topic. Topics covered include self and family, the human body, farm animals, zoo animals, insects, plants, fruit, vegetables, seasons and weather, clothing, colors, etc.

At the same time as the children are learning English, they also learn about such things as the life cycles of insects; how a color wheel works, what a plant needs for healthy growth and more.

Early Reading and Writing Skills

Beginning phonics skills are built into every lesson. Children learn the sounds associated with each letter and how to correctly write the letter.

We use an award winning, research validated, phonics program to teach essential reading and writing skills to our students. This is a multi-sensory program so it appeals to all kinds of learners. It is fun, powerful and very effective.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning to associate letters or letter groups with the sounds they represent. In spoken English there are 44 sounds which are represented by the 26 letters of the alphabet. If a child learns how the letters combine to represent sounds she will be able to pronounce unfamiliar words and will have the tools necessary for independent reading.

Catering to Different Learning Styles

"Children's ways of learning are as different as the colors of the rainbow" - Dr Howard Gardner

All people learn differently. Among young children the most predominant learning styles are Visual (Looking), Auditory (Listening), Kinesthetic( Moving) and Tactile (Touching).

No child uses just one style but every child will prefer one style over the others. Your child will be better at processing information when it is presented in the way she understands best. Our lessons are a dynamic and fun experience of songs, chants, games, movement, visuals, role play and more. We take a holistic approach that is designed to cover all the learning styles.

No matter what a person's preferred learning style may be, all learners benefit when information is presented in a variety of fresh and interesting ways.

Songs, Chants and Story Telling

Songs, chants and stories are a great way for young ones to learn. Song and chants teach children the rhythm and flow of English.  The repetitive and rhythmic nature of songs also makes it easier for children to pick up the language. Singing is a very constructive way for children to actually use the language even at a very early stage.

All children love stories and songs but this is especially so with auditory learners. They respond to questions about stories with enthusiasm and quickly pick up phrases and expressions from songs.

TPR  (Total Physical Response)

If your child is a kinesthetic learner she will learn best through physical movement. TPR is a teaching method devised by Dr James Asher in the 1960's. It is very effective in teaching beginners by having them respond physically to the commands of the teacher. TPR mirrors the way a child learns their first language. When the mother calls "come to mommy" or "look at Daddy" the child responds with their whole body, moving toward the mother or turning their head to look at the father. This is known as "a language - body conversation". The parent speaks and the child answers with a physical response, at the same time language is imprinted into the brain's biological program. This type of conversation and learning takes place even before the child begins to speak. The TPR method takes this concept and applies it in the classroom. TPR is not only effective but also fun as it gets children up and moving about.

Art and Crafts

Hands-on art and craft work really consolidates a lesson for a tactile learner. Cutting and pasting etc helps to develop fine motor coordination skills. At the same time, crafts also provide a concentrated listening activity as children really need to focus on the instructions in order to complete the task.

 Educational Toys and Games

"Play is a child's work". Not only are our games fun, they are highly educational and motivating. The games that we use in class provide children with a concrete reason to use English. They also provide a structured format for children to communicate with each other and their teacher. Children also learn important social skills such as cooperation, sharing and turn taking. Tactile learners are especially engaged by touching, moving and manipulating the parts and pieces of the games.

Flashcards, Picture Books, Short Video Clips, Visuals,

Everyone knows a picture is worth a thousand words. Visual learners really appreciate the use of images that help them connect to the language they are studying. From cute picture books to stunning video projected onto a big screen, we incorporate a variety of visually stimulating resources into all our lessons.
